Remarks by H.E. Mr. Tofig F. Musayev Permanent Representative of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the United Nations at the Ambassadorial-level meeting of the Group of Landlocked Developing Countries / handover ceremony of the Chairmanship New York, 24 January 2025, UNHQ, CR8 Mr. Chair, Excellencies, Distinguished Colleagues,
Allow me to begin by expressing our sincere appreciation to H.E. Dr. Gladys Mokhawa, Permanent Representative of Botswana, for her exceptional leadership as Chair of the Group of Landlocked Developing Countries over the past years. Under your stewardship, Botswana has guided the Group with remarkable dedication, ensuring that the collective priorities and challenges of LLDCs remain at the forefront of international discussions. I would also like to extend our warmest congratulations to H.E. Ambassador Diego Pary Rodríguez, Permanent Representative of Bolivia, on assuming the Chairmanship of the LLDCs for the 2025-2026 cycle. We are confident that under Bolivia’s leadership, the Group will continue to make significant progress in advancing our shared agenda, especially as we approach the pivotal moment of the LLDC3 Conference. I further wish to express our sincere appreciation to Under-Secretary-General Ms. Rabab Fatima for her remarks and update on the LLDC3 preparations.
Mr. Chair, Addressing climate change is a key focus for LLDCs and one of the central priorities outlined in the Programme of Action for LLDCs. Azerbaijan underscored this priority last November by hosting the second-largest COP in history, becoming the first Landlocked Developing country to lead this global event. Among its many efforts and achievements, the COP29 Presidency’s Action Agenda, developed in collaboration with the relevant UN bodies, has launched 14 global and 8 regional initiatives, each strategically designed to tackle critical climate challenges and deliver transformative solutions. We express our deepest gratitude to the countries that endorsed the COP29 Pledges and Declarations and invite all members to actively participate in these initiatives, particularly by joining the COP29 Declaration on Green Digital Action, the COP29 Declaration on Enhanced Action in Tourism, and the COP29 Green Energy Zones and Corridors Pledge. These initiatives align closely with the priorities outlined in the new Programme of Action for LLDCs, focusing on enhancing adaptive capacity, building resilience, and fostering sustainable development. The texts of the Declarations and Pledges, along with their background information, are available on the COP29 webpage. Additionally, they will be forwarded to the Chair after this meeting with a request for circulation within the Group. We look forward to constructive engagement and collaboration under Bolivia’s Chairmanship. Rest assured in Azerbaijan’s full support for the Chair’s efforts. We trust that the coming years will bring fruitful partnerships, innovative solutions, and strengthened solidarity within our Group. Thank you. |
